Pawfly Aquarium Filter Floss is loose white polyester fiber for mechanical filtration. Instead of cutting a pad to shape, you tear off a tuft and spread it inside the filter chamber. It catches fine particles, leftover food and fish waste so they don’t keep drifting around the tank.
Why floss helps
Sponges catch large debris, but tiny particles often slip through and leave water slightly hazy. A layer of floss traps those fine bits. Many keepers call it “polishing” because it gives the water that final clear look.
How to use it

- Tear off a piece a little larger than the space.
- Spread it evenly so water can’t rush through a thin spot.
- Place it after the coarse sponge and before biological media.
Because it’s loose, it fits hang-on filters, canisters, sumps, ponds and turtle tanks alike.
Rinse or replace

Pawfly says the floss can be rinsed and reused, then replaced once it turns thin or worn. In practice, floss clogs quickly in a messy tank. Rinse it in old tank water when flow slows, and swap it when it no longer fluffs back up.
Watch the flow

Packing floss too tightly restricts flow and can make a hang-on filter overflow its media basket. Start with a thin layer and add more only if the water stays cloudy.
Tips
Keep the bag closed between uses so it stays clean. Floss is cheap, so it is fine to throw out a dirty piece instead of washing it again and again. Never use household polyester stuffing, which may contain treatments that are unsafe for fish.
In a hang-on filter, a thin layer of floss placed in front of the cartridge can extend the cartridge life, since it catches the fine material first and is cheaper to replace.
Alternatives
If you prefer a pad with a set thickness, try the Aquatic Experts FilterFirst roll or the Aquatic Experts polishing pad.
