The hygger HG173 is a 35W saltwater LED bar for fish-only tanks, soft corals and LPS, and it also works as a refugium light. The fixture measures 21.3 inches long and suits tanks from 24 to 30 inches.
LED mix
It uses 96 royal blue (440-445nm), 48 cool white (7500K) and 72 U-V (395~400nm) LEDs. The heavy blue and U-V content brings out coral fluorescence, while the white keeps fish looking natural.
Four channels

- Daylight: cool white, royal blue and U-V for viewing
- White and blue: a natural ocean look
- Blue: royal blue and U-V for coral color
- Moonlight: low light for night viewing
24/7 mode

On the inline controller you pick a channel, an intensity in 10% steps and a timer of 3H, 6H, 9H or 12H. The light then turns on and off on schedule, with a 30 minute ramp up and a 30 minute ramp down.
Build

The LEDs carry an IP65 water-resistant, corrosion resistant coating, in a marine grade aluminum housing with an acrylic lens. A quiet cooling fan cycles on and off as needed.
Mounting
Use the aluminum bracket on framed or frameless tanks up to 1 inch thick, or the two metal legs, which extend up to 4.5 inches on either side.
Using it as a refugium light
Over a sump refugium growing chaeto, set a long daylight period, often opposite the display schedule, to help stabilize pH overnight. For a display, start at moderate intensity and give corals several weeks to adjust before raising it. If you outgrow it, the NavaReef 65 is a step up.
The aluminum legs make it easy to lift the light off for maintenance and set it back in the same spot. Wipe the acrylic lens with fresh water and a soft cloth when salt builds up, and check the inline controller is mounted where splashes cannot reach it.
The Bottom Line
An easy-to-program reef bar for FOWLR, soft coral and refugium use.
