hygger’s 1 inch Aquarium Filter Floss is a micro fine polyester pad for water polishing. Several layers of fine fiber catch tiny suspended particles that coarser sponges let through, which is what clears hazy water.
Size and thickness
Each pad is about 12 x 68 x 1 inches. hygger notes the thickness is measured dry and varies by batch, and the pads are folded and vacuum sealed for shipping, so let it relax before cutting.
Fits any filter

The floss cuts and bends easily, so it works in hang-on filters, canisters, internal filters, sumps, wet/dry systems and surface skimmers. Place it after your coarse sponge so the floss only has to handle fine particles.
Shrimp and fry guard

A wrap of the 1 inch pad over an intake keeps small fish and shrimp from being drawn in, a handy trick for nano and breeding tanks.
Biological bonus

Bacteria will settle on the floss over time. Still, its main job is mechanical. Don’t rely on it as your only biological stage.
Cleaning and replacing
- Rinse lightly in tank water when flow drops.
- Replace it once it turns brown and compressed, since packed floss restricts flow.
- Cut a fresh piece slightly oversized to avoid gaps.
Fixing cloudy water
Bacterial blooms and fine sand dust both make water hazy. Floss handles the dust kind well. If haze returns quickly after you add fresh floss, the cause is more likely a bacterial bloom from overfeeding or a new tank, and the fix is time, lighter feeding and water changes rather than more floss.
Alternatives
The Aquatic Experts FilterFirst roll is a similar bulk floss. For coarse prefiltering in front of the floss, an ALEGI sponge pad works well.
The Bottom Line
Good bulk polishing floss. Put it after a coarse sponge and replace it when it packs down.
