- Material
- Polyester fiber
NovAbyss Aquarium Filter Floss is loose polyester fiber for mechanical filtration, sold in a 5 oz pack. You tear off what you need and shape it to fit the chamber, with no measuring or cutting. It captures fish waste, uneaten food and fine particles before they circulate back into the tank.
Install it loosely
The floss has a fluffy, layered structure. Installed loosely and evenly, it traps fine particles while letting water through. Packed tight, it chokes flow. Spread a thin, even layer with no gaps at the edges.
Where it fits

- Hang-on-back filter baskets.
- Canister trays, on top of coarse media.
- Internal filter chambers.
- Turtle tank and pond filters.
It’s suitable for freshwater and saltwater.
Replace when dirty

NovAbyss suggests replacing the floss when it’s dirty or when flow begins to slow. Floss is a consumable, so swapping it out is quicker than washing. Lift the used piece out, tear off a fresh section and put it in place in seconds.
Storage

The fiber arrives vacuum-compressed and expands once opened. Keep the unused portion in a clean, sealed bag so it doesn’t collect dust before use.
Why add floss
Sponges catch larger debris, but fine particles that make water look hazy often pass through. A layer of floss is a cheap way to get that polished look, especially after you stir up the substrate during cleaning.
Placement order
Put floss after the coarse sponge and before biological media. That way it catches fine debris before it reaches the bio media and helps keep those pores clear.
Floss also helps clear the haze after you add new substrate or rescape. Run a fresh piece for a day or two, then toss it once it has done its job.
Alternatives
Similar loose floss: Pawfly filter floss. For a cut-to-size strip, see charmshine floss pad.
The Bottom Line
Simple polishing floss that is quick to fit and quick to replace.
