The RAINFLOW Aquarium Filter Media Pad is a white polishing floss for aquariums, ponds and turtle tanks. Its fibers are finer and fluffier than ordinary cotton and naturally interlaced, which helps them catch small particles.
Size
You get one 39.4 x 12 inch pad about 0.78 inches thick. Thick enough to stand up in a tray, thin enough to fold into an HOB media slot.
Soak before use

RAINFLOW recommends soaking the pad in water before you put it in the filter. Dry floss can trap air and float or block flow. A quick soak and squeeze lets water pass through evenly from the start.
Where it fits

- Fish tank filters, freshwater and saltwater.
- Pond filter boxes and water gardens.
- Turtle tank filters, which load up fast.
Durability

The fibers are tough enough to survive repeated washing, so you can rinse and reuse the pad several times. Rinse in tank water, not tap water, to protect bacteria in the rest of the filter.
Placement
Put it after a coarse sponge. If it’s the first thing water hits, it will clog quickly and the filter will start bypassing it.
Cut pieces slightly larger than the space so they press against the sides. A pad that leaves gaps lets water slip around it instead of through it. Keep the rest of the sheet sealed in a bag so it stays clean until you need the next piece.
Similar options
The MAQIHAN floss pad is the same sheet size. For a heavier first stage, use the Aquatic Experts bonded pad in front.
The Bottom Line
A solid bulk polishing pad. Soak it, cut it snug and keep a sponge in front.
