Instant Ocean Reef Crystals is a synthetic sea salt made for reef aquariums. This box makes 50 gallons of saltwater. Instant Ocean formulates it with key reef elements at higher concentrations than natural seawater, so it gives stony corals and coralline algae more to work with than a basic fish-only salt does.

What’s different from regular sea salt

  • Extra calcium. Stony corals and coralline algae use calcium to build their skeletons, so a richer starting level supports that growth.
  • Extra trace elements. These cover the minor nutrients that get used up between water changes.
  • Added vitamins. Instant Ocean includes them to support corals, anemones and other invertebrates.
  • Metal detoxifier. The mix neutralizes traces of heavy metals that can come through tap water.

If you only keep fish and live rock, plain Instant Ocean Sea Salt costs less and does the job. Reef Crystals earns its place once corals are in the tank.

Mixing it well

Start with RO/DI water if you can, since the salt adds back what corals need and you don’t want tap water nitrates or phosphates along with it. Add salt to the water, not the other way around, and run a small pump or powerhead with a heater in the mixing bucket for several hours. Check salinity with a refractometer before the water goes in. Most reef keepers aim for 1.025 to 1.026 specific gravity.

Match the temperature of new water to the tank, and keep your mixing method the same each time so salinity doesn’t swing between changes.

Storage

Salt absorbs moisture, and damp salt clumps and gets harder to measure. Keep the bag sealed tightly in a dry spot, and avoid storing it right next to a sump or a humid fish room.

Who should look elsewhere

Reefers who dose their own calcium and alkalinity sometimes prefer a salt with lower starting levels so dosing stays predictable. If that’s you, compare this with Red Sea Coral Pro and pick the profile that fits your dosing plan.

The Bottom Line

A solid everyday salt for reef tanks with stony corals. Fish-only keepers can save money with regular sea salt, and heavy dosers may want a lower-baseline mix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use it in a fish-only tank?

Yes, it's safe for fish, but regular sea salt costs less and fish-only tanks don't need the extra calcium.

How much water does this box make?

This size makes 50 gallons of saltwater.

Should I mix it with tap water?

RO/DI water is better. Tap water can carry nitrates, phosphates and metals, though the mix does neutralize traces of heavy metals.
