CHOUJIGIA Ceramic Bio Filter Media is a set of 42PCS porous ceramic sticks. Each stick is 5.83 inches long and 1.4 inches wide. Thousands of tiny pores give beneficial bacteria a large surface to live on, which supports biological filtration. The sticks also trap fine particles as water passes over them.

Snap to fit

The handiest feature is that the sticks can be broken to size. A full stick lies flat in a sump or long canister tray. Snapped pieces drop into a hang-on-back basket, an internal filter or a small media bag. That makes one pack usable across several different filters.

What they do

Bacteria living in the pores convert ammonia and nitrite from fish waste. The brand also claims the media helps balance pH and improves oxygen in the water. The main job, though, is biological filtration, and the more porous surface you have, the more bacteria the filter can hold.

Placement

  • Put the sticks after sponge or floss so they stay clean.
  • Stand or stack them where water flows through, not past.
  • In sumps, lay them in the bio chamber in rows.

Where they can be used

The brand lists marine aquariums, freshwater aquariums, planted tanks, settling tanks and ponds. Because they are ceramic, they are inert and suit most setups.

Care

Rinse new sticks in dechlorinated water to remove dust before use. Once the tank is running, leave them alone; if they get coated in sludge, swirl them in a bucket of tank water. Compare them with block-style Reefing Art bio blocks or loose Reefing Art rings to see which shape suits your filter.

Snap sticks over a towel, not over the tank, so small crumbs and dust do not end up in the water.

As with any new media, give the tank a few weeks to settle and keep an eye on ammonia and nitrite readings while bacteria build up.

The Bottom Line

Flexible bio media that you can size to almost any filter or sump.
