Aqueon Plant and Shrimp Aquarium Substrate is a clay-based aqua soil for freshwater tanks. It provides a stable foundation for new and established plants and suits planted aquariums, shrimp habitats, community tanks and aquatic turtle setups. The bag holds 5 Pounds.
Clay granules that hold up
Aqueon says the granules keep their spherical shape over time rather than breaking down into compacted soil. That matters: compacted soil chokes roots and traps waste, while rounded granules leave room for water and roots to move.
For shrimp

The gaps between granules give baby shrimp places to hide and graze on biofilm. A dark brown base also makes red and blue shrimp colors stand out.
Aqueon lists turtle habitats as a use. Turtles dig and are messy, so plan on more frequent cleaning and a strong filter.
How much to buy

A 5 Pounds bag covers a small tank with a thin bed. For a 10 gallon at a 2 inch depth, you will need more than one bag. Slope deeper at the back for a fuller look.
Setup tips

- Pour gently and smooth with a long tool.
- Fill slowly over a plate or bag to prevent clouding.
- Plant right away while the bed is soft.
- Run the filter for a few days before adding shrimp.
Plants that do well
Cryptocorynes, Amazon swords like the Echinodorus, stem plants and carpeting plants all root easily in soil. Add root tabs after a few months as the soil’s own nutrients are used up.
Maintenance
Vacuum lightly over open areas only. Avoid digging deep into the soil, which can release fine particles and cloud the water.
Compared with others
For a similar soil focused on shrimp and soft water, see Fluval Plant and Shrimp Stratum.
Store any leftover soil in its sealed bag in a dry spot; it is useful for topping up low spots after a rescape.
The Bottom Line
A stable clay soil for planted and shrimp tanks that will not turn to mud.
