Fluval Plant and Shrimp Stratum is a freshwater substrate made for planted aquariums and shrimp tanks. It is sold in a 4.4 lb bag (model 12693) and an 8.8 lb bag (model 12694). It is a different product from Fluval’s Bio Stratum volcanic soil.

Porous granules

The granules are porous, which gives beneficial nitrifying bacteria lots of surface to colonize. Plant roots also push through it easily and take up nutrients, which helps rooted plants like cryptocorynes and swords settle in.

pH and water

Stratum is designed to hold pH in a neutral to slightly acidic range. That suits most tropical community fish, soft water species and many shrimp, including Caridina species that prefer softer water. Fluval also says it helps keep water clear and manages organic discoloration, such as the tea color that natural driftwood can release.

Shelter for baby shrimp

The gaps between granules give newborn shrimp hiding places until they are big enough to venture into the open tank. That can make a real difference to how many babies survive in a community setup.

How much to buy

A depth of about 2 inches works for most plants; go deeper at the back for a sloped layout. For a 10 gallon tank, the 8.8 lb bag or two small bags is a typical starting point. Nano tanks and shrimp cubes often need only the 4.4 lb bag.

Setting up

  • Do not rinse it hard; the granules are soft and can break down.
  • Pour slowly and fill the tank gently over a plate or bag to avoid clouding.
  • Expect the pH to settle over the first weeks.
  • Use a long scoop like the FINBe substrate shovel to shape slopes.

Maintenance

Soil granules are lighter than gravel. Vacuum only the surface, gently, so you do not break them up or pull them out. Over time soils lose some buffering ability, which is normal.

Who it suits

Shrimp keepers, nano planted tanks and soft water community setups that want a natural dark base.

The Bottom Line

A shrimp-friendly planted soil that keeps water soft and baby shrimp hidden.
