Seachem Focus is a fish medication used mainly as a binder for medicated food. It can be used alone or mixed with other medications to make them palatable to fish. It works in freshwater and marine aquariums and comes in a 5 Grams container.
Why medicate through food
When you add medication to the water, much of it never reaches the inside of the fish. Internal infections respond better when the drug is eaten. Seachem says Focus can greatly reduce the loss of medication to the water through diffusion, keeping more of it in the food until the fish eats it.
What it treats

Seachem lists fungal and bacterial infections. It is most often combined with antibiotics, such as Seachem’s Kanaplex or Metroplex, to build a medicated food for internal problems.
Making medicated food
- Put a small amount of food, pellets or crushed flakes, in a dish.
- Add Focus and the medication in the ratios on the labels.
- Add a few drops of tank water to bind, mix and let it soak in.
- Feed it right away, in small amounts, and remove what is not eaten.
Many keepers also add a garlic supplement to tempt fish that are off their food.
Which food to use
Choose a food your fish already eat eagerly. Pellets such as New Life Spectrum marine pellets soak up the mix well. For herbivores, algae wafers work.
Bundled option
If you want Focus together with the medications it is usually paired with, there is also a bundle pack that combines Metroplex, Kanaplex, Focus and Garlic Guard, which saves buying four separate containers.
Tips
- Feed medicated food only; skip regular meals so fish are hungry.
- Follow the course length printed on the medication you use.
- Keep water clean during treatment, as uneaten food fouls quickly.
Small container
A little goes a long way, which is why the container holds just 5 Grams.
