Fluval Spec/Evo/Flex Activated Carbon, 3-Pack

These are replacement activated carbon inserts made for Fluval’s desktop all-in-one tanks: the Spec, Evo and Flex series. Each pack has three inserts, shaped to drop into the rear filter chamber of those tanks.

What the carbon removes

Fluval says the research-grade carbon removes heavy metals, odors, discoloration and other pollutants. The large surface area inside each granule traps dissolved compounds as water passes through, which leaves the water clearer.

Which tanks it fits

It’s made for the Fluval Spec, Evo and Flex lines, such as the Fluval Spec 5, the Fluval Flex 9 and the Fluval Evo V. Check that your tank’s rear chamber takes the standard insert before ordering.

Fitting and swapping

• Rinse the new insert briefly to wash off dust.
• Slide it into the media chamber in the same spot as the old one.
• Replace it once the water starts to yellow or smell again, often around a month.

When to remove it

Carbon pulls many medications out of the water. Take the insert out before treating and add a fresh one after. In heavily planted tanks, some keepers leave carbon out, since it can also take up liquid fertilizer.

Keep your biofilter

Swap carbon on its own day, and don’t rinse the biological sponge or ceramic media in that same session. That keeps enough bacteria to avoid an ammonia spike. Small tanks have little margin, so a lost colony shows up fast as cloudy water or stressed fish. If you see either, test the water and do a partial water change before touching the filter again.

Who should look elsewhere

If your rear chamber holds loose media, bagged or bulk carbon may cost less per use.
