Fluval Carbon is activated carbon pre-packed in nylon bags, three 100 gram bags to a pack. You drop a bag into your filter’s media basket and it starts clearing odors and discoloration right away. Fluval describes it as premium, research-grade, low-ash carbon with lots of surface area.

Which filters it fits

Fluval lists it for the 106, 206, 306, 406, FX5, 105, 205, 305, 405, 104, 204, 304 and 404 canisters. It also works in most other canisters with room for a bag, including the current Fluval 307 and 407.

How to use it

  • Rinse the bag briefly to wash off carbon dust.
  • Put it after the mechanical foam, so debris doesn’t coat it.
  • Replace it every 4 weeks for best results, as Fluval recommends.

When to remove it

Carbon absorbs many medications, which stops them from working. Take it out before you dose meds, and add fresh carbon after the treatment to clear what’s left. Fluval also advises care in planted tanks, since carbon can take up some nutrients.

Why pre-bagged

Loose carbon is cheaper by weight, but you need your own mesh bag, a scoop and a messy rinse in the sink. Spilled carbon dust also stains grout and countertops. Pre-bagged carbon saves the fuss and fits neatly in the baskets. It’s suitable for both freshwater and saltwater.

Who should look elsewhere

For larger tanks or many filters, bulk carbon costs less, for example Marineland Black Diamond. Then reuse your own mesh bags.

The Bottom Line

Clean, convenient carbon for canister owners. Swap a bag monthly and pull it whenever you medicate.
