Filtration and aeration together

Water is drawn through a cylindrical foam sponge, which traps debris, and then pumped back out. The included air hose mixes air into the outflow. You control the bubbles, from dense to fine, with that hose. Water flow itself is fixed and can’t be turned down. For many tanks, this means you won’t need a separate air pump.

Slim profile

The body is about 12.2 inches tall and 2.43 inches wide, narrow enough to tuck behind plants or rock. That’s a plus in a tank where you don’t want a filter hanging on the rim.

Media and cleaning

• The foam sponge comes out for rinsing. Squeeze it in old tank water rather than tap water.

The body is ABS plastic with a copper motor and a ceramic shaft, which suits both fresh and salt water. Keep it fully submerged at all times; running it dry can damage it.

Who should look elsewhere

The fixed 317 GPH flow is strong. Bettas, long-finned fish and fry may struggle with it, and a sponge filter like the hygger double sponge filter is gentler. For heavy bioloads in a large tank, a canister such as the Fluval 407 holds far more media.
